Debussy? Beethoven? Any time, anywhere!

I had the enviable honor of recording an orchestra rehearsing Claude Debussy’s Prelude A L’apres-midi D’un Faun and Ludwig Beethoven’s Symphony No.1 in C Major at a The Good Shepard Center on Roosevelt Island.

The orchestra was conducted by Benjamin Hochman, a brilliant pianist in his own right and just the nicest guy you could ever imagine.

Assisting on the session was the talented (and also quite nice) Lily Hwen who works at the new Figure 8 Studios here in Brooklyn and has worked at The End NYC on occasion.

I’d love to do more of this.  Really.  A lot more.

Christmas came early at The Whelping Box!

Speaking of mics… I just received my Placid Audio Carbonphone mic!!!

I first heard this thing when while The Polyphonic Spree was soundchecking in Brighton, UK.

I’m familiar with the Copperphone mics (they’ve got one at The End NYC).  But this was different, like a 1970’s K-mart public address system in only the most pleasing way. I knew right then I must have one.

So I asked about it and it turns out their bass player (and one hell of a nice guy) Mark Pirro was the force behind Placid Audio.  Who knew?

Back to the mics.

I’m gonna finish these damn things… I SWEAR!!!

Capsules mounted and wired and head baskets on!  All that’s left is to wire up the 7pin cables and calibrate them (Calibrate is a word I use that means “cross fingers, plug in, turn on.”

New addition to The Whelping Box Studio

My little studio is growing up so fast.  I’m so proud, I… I’m tearing up just talking thinking about the little tyke.

Here’s a pic of the new pair of Crane Song Insigna tube eq’s, now strapped squarely across the mix buss.

I have not had a ton of time with them yet, but so far they really add something special.  Some kind of magic in the mids makes guitars jump and the “Air” band (40k) does wonders…

Tubes and transformers I guess…

UK Gigs!!!

Just back from a few gigs across the pond.

Had a blast opening for Caravan Of Thieves in London and The Polyphonic Spree in Brighton.

Go see these bands.  They are very different from each other but both absolutely incredible at what they do.  Not an asshole in the bunch either (quite the contrary in fact) which made the whole thing that much better.

Oh, yeah, I went here too, just cause, you know, I had to:

Best way to spend a day…

So here’s the scoop.  I can’t be too specific because this is all still a surprise I’m told.

My friend has this friend and this guy got cancer (He’s ok for now, just FYI).

So, all of this guy’s friends (musicians) got together and wrote a song that says, in short, “We all love you and we’ve got your back”.  They recorded tracks wherever they were, all over the world in fact. My friend asked if I would assemble them and mix the song.

So that’s what he and I did today.

I ask you, what better way to spend my time?

4th Show added!!!

4 (count’em FOUR) gigs coming up!
